THE
REAL GREY'S ANATOMY A Behind-the-Scenes Look at the Real Lives of Surgical Residents The Grey’s Anatomy TV series may be fictional; yet there are reflections of reality in the stories. The question is: what is real? Spend some
time with residents learning to become surgeons in the real world.
Follow them on the hospital floor and into the OR... from the first cut to the Chief Resident year... as they master scalpels, sutures as well as the larger challenges of treating the patients and figuring out the hospital and the health care system.
I spent
months following surgery residents
who, just like those on episodes of Grey’s
Anatomy,
spend their days (and many nights) putting their medical education to
use and
finding out what it takes to become a surgeon. But there are big
differences: their patients don’t
pull through or pass away just in time for the
closing credits, the ultimate outcomes of cases are not always clear,
loose
ends are not neatly tied up. For most patients, the causes and
treatments of an
ailment are unremarkable and routine. By the same token, the residents’
days
and nights in the hospital are marked by real successes and real
failures
involving real people, not merely the entrances and exits of actors
between
commercial breaks.
That’s what
this book is about: the crucible that is
surgery residency and how it
shapes the lives of the
people within it.
